The Garden

Flowers are beautiful

so are trees

yet they look totally different

As the trees grow

And the seasons change

The petals fall off of the flowers

and the leaves fall off of the trees

Yet, they are still beautiful

They have a simple magnificence about them

A magnificence that can’t be identified

Yet is clearly seen

and clearly felt

But instead of watering them

Instead of laying fresh soil

Instead of putting in the work to garden

We cut the flowers and the trees down

We build big tall buildings in their place

We forget the flowers and the trees existed

We forget how they shined when they were watered

We forget that they were here first

We lose sight of what they taught us

The gifts that they brought into our lives

Before the big tall buildings

Before we dug up the roots

Before we threw the roots into the trash

Those flowers and trees were growing

We didn’t kill them by caring too much

We killed them by caring too little

Take a look around you

What are you watering

What are you ignoring

What are you handing off to someone else “to fix”

How can you make a difference for the flowers and the trees that are striving to grow around you?

How can you help them to continue to grow long after you are gone?

Because without the flowers bees could not exist and without the bees you and I would not be here

Do the work

Water your garden

Till the soil

And speak to those plants with love
